FAQ

How to Edit / Trim a Recording

The following guidance will demonstrate how to complete common editing tasks in Panopto such as: trimming a recording, adding in extra streams and replacing slides.

Key Terminology

Helpful terms for when you are editing your recording:

  • Timeline - represents the entire length of your video showing each stream of content that makes up your session. The playhead (red vertical line) will move across the timeline as the video plays.
  • Primary Stream (P1) - captures the audio and visual sources of your recording.
  • Secondary Stream (S1) - captures the 'main screen' of your device (if you are screen sharing). You can add in extra streams. An extra stream will appear as 'S2'.
  • Slide Deck (SL) - when 'Capture PowerPoint' is enabled, Panopto will capture your slides into a slide deck. Slides can be moved, swapped out and added in.

Trim a Recording

  1.  Hover over the video you want to edit, expand the More menu, represented by three vertical dots, and then select Edit. This will open the Panopto Editor.
  2. Navigate to the start of the timestamp of where you want to trim.
  3. Hover over the timeline and a vertical grey bar will appear across all the streams in the timeline.
  4. Click and drag the bar to the end of where you want to trim.
  5. The trimmed area will appear in a dark grey box. Anything in the grey area will not playback in the Panopto viewer once you apply your changes. Editing in Panopto is non-destructive, therefore the trimmed content is not deleted, so you are able to re-add those sections back into your video at any time if necessary.
  6. Ensure that the transition between trimmed areas is smooth and no important information has been cut.
  7. Once happy with the changes, click 'Apply' in the top right corner.

Trim an Individual Secondary Stream

  1. Hover over the S1 section of the timeline and a short grey line should appear.
  2. Repeat steps 4-7 as described above.

Add in Extra Streams

Why would I want to add additional streams?

Additional streams are useful if you wish to add in extra audio and video to your recordings. Additional primary streams will include audio, whereas secondary streams will not.

  1. Open the Panopto Editor.
  2. Navigate to the left-hand menu and select 'Streams'.
  3. Click 'Add a Stream'.
  4. Choose to either add a primary or secondary stream.
  5. Insert a recording from your device.
  6. To adjust the start time of additional streams or change their name, click on the 3 dots next to the stream and select 'Edit'.
  7. Click 'Save' when any changes have been made to the additional stream(s), then 'Apply' to ensure that they are saved to the recording.

Add, Edit and Delete Slides

Add a Presentation to a Recording

  1. Open Panopto Editor.

  2.  From the 'Slides' tab on the left-hand side of the editor, select '+ Add a presentation'.

  3. Upload the selected presentation. Note: only PowerPoint presentations can be uploaded to the slide deck in Panopto.

  4. To add a specific slide to a spot on the video timeline, place the red line in the timeline where you would like to add your slide. Select the icon next to the slide you want to add.

  5. Your slide(s) will appear in the 'SL' row in the timeline at the points they were added.

  6. 'Apply' the changes.

  • Slides will remain onscreen until the next slide is set to appear. Adding a slide does not change the audio or presenter video, it only adds the slide image. To add a section with new audio and video, see above for Add in Extra Streams.

Edit Individual Slides

  1. Under 'Contents' in the left-hand menu, select the three dots next to the slide and then select 'Edit'.
  2. On the Edit Table of Contents entry page, you can review and update the following information:
  • Title
  • Time: Where in the video the slide will appear.
  • Preview image
  • Search keywords
  • Link: Add a link if you want to point to a helpful web page. For more information on using external resources in your recording, please see Embed External Resources Into a Recording.

Remove Slides from a Recording

  1. On the Contents tab in the Editor, hover over the slide you want to remove.
  2. Select the three vertical dots to the right of its name, and then select Delete.
  • To swap out a slide - follow the guidance above and then step 4 of Add a Presentation to a Recording.
