FAQ

Update/Request Captions on Recordings

The following guide explains how to edit your own captions on a Panopto recording, and how you can request support.

The Public Sector Bodies Accessibility Regulations (PSBAR) 2018 legislation requires all video and audio content produced by universities to include accurate transcripts and/or captioning.

The Panopto system creates automatic speech recognition (ASR) captions which are a good starting point, but they are not 100% accurate. So checking and editing names, medical terminology and calculations are required to meet PSBAR legislation.

Edit captions

In Panopto Editor

  1. Once a video has been uploaded to Panopto wait for the automatic captions to be generated.
  2. Navigate to the recording and click the Edit button.
  3. When Panopto Editor is open, go to the Captions section in the left-hand menu. The captions will appear as boxes of text with timestamps next to them.

The captions should be in sync to your voice, if you find that the captions are out of sync then please contact somav@liverpool.ac.uk.
  4. Play the recording and scroll down to follow along with the captions. Listen to spot any inaccuracies.
  5. If you notice an incorrect word, phrase or sentence, click on the caption textbox to type in the correction
  6. You can also use the Find & Replace (Ctrl+F) option to search the captions for a word or phrase and replace the text.
  7. When you are finished editing, please ensure that you click the Apply button on the top right-hand of the Editor.

Support for Caption Correction

It is recommend that creators edit their own captions for both speed and accuracy. However, this may not always be possible.

The School of Medicine’s Closed Caption Correction (CCC) team supports all MBChB content providers by correcting captions on reusable recorded materials. This service helps alleviate the workload for academics and clinicians, allowing them to focus on other content developments, such as the addition of interactivity to support active student learning.

Requesting Support

Indicate that you require caption correction support when informing the relevant Year Administration team and the TEL team (via somav@liverpool.ac.uk) that you have submitted new content or have approved existing content for reuse.

Due to the high volume of recorded content in the MBChB programme, we kindly ask that you request CCC support as early as possible. This ensures timely processing and publishing of content to the VLE (Canvas).

Further information is available on the School of Medicine - Captioning for Video page.
