Interactive Teaching Resources - Overview

Guidance for designing interactive resources and preparing teaching sessions for the MBChB programme

Welcome to the Interactive Teaching Resources Guidance

High quality educational resources play a vital role in the education of our students, inspiring student doctors and enhancing the reputation of the School of Medicine and the University of Liverpool. Each tabbed section of guidance will support you to provide rich teaching content for the MBChB programme:

  • Prepare - plan the elements that will form your online teaching space on Canvas.
  • Online Resources - integrate interactive elements into online materials using content development platforms.
  • Teaching Sessions - digital tools to support interactivity in face to face teaching.

Active Learning Theory

The aim of active learning is to increase engagement and knowledge retention, encouraging students to develop their knowledge by reflecting on their understanding and aligning it with their own experiences and interactions.

There are many ways to encourage active learning in your teaching, through gamification, collaborative group work and flipped classroom activities, for example. Likewise in the online environment, we can incorporate activities that encourage students to become active participants, engaged in the MBChB curriculum and to take a holistic approach to their learning

  • Online activities such as quizzes, discussion boards and interactive content can increase student engagement in course materials.
  • In group sessions, consider using polling or Q&A tools such as Poll Everywhere, in addition to peer discussion and problem solving.

Interactive resources have been positively received by undergraduate students with insightful feedback shared through EOB evaluations, H5P surveys and forum meetings.

"It consolidates the learning objectives, but it’s also quite a good exercise to do with friends to test your understanding." - Year 1 Student feedback on a H5P resource.

Active learning is a Hallmark of the University of Liverpool's Curriculum Framework, and you can find case studies and practical ideas for incorporating active learning into teaching, as well as some of the research and evidence highlighting the educational benefits on this page.
