FAQ

What is H5P Smart Import?

H5P's Smart Import uses generative AI to create interactive resources. It works well with declarative knowledge and can transform text, videos and documents into various content types. Image based activities are not currently supported.

Smart Import can be used to create:

Smart Import works on a credit based system. Each time an author (staff) uses Smart Import, one credit is used. Before generating content, consider the topic and type of content you wish to create. Further information on planning an interactive resource can be found on the Interactive Teaching Resources - Prepare guide.

IMPORTANT: all content created with H5P, especially Smart Import, must be reviewed and quality assured accurately by the creator or lead. Follow the Tips for reviewing H5P content guidance for further support.

Pros and cons of using Smart Import

Pros

Creates a Starting Point

Removes the 'blank page', helping staff who are new to H5P to explore the platform and see what is possible.

Consistent Design

Interactive Books generated with Smart Import are presented in a systematic way, helping to maintain consistency between course materials. Ensure to edit H5P content and make purposeful design choices to avoid resources being too formulaic.

Variety of Formats

Smart Import can quickly produce multiple content types based on the same input, saving you time when experimenting with different ideas to find the most relevant activity.

Based on Teaching Materials

Use your presentation notes or lecture recording as the source for an import, to ensure the generated content aligns with your teaching session and learning objectives. You can specify the study level during the import process for further customisation.

Cons

Time-consuming QA

Manually reviewing and correcting content produced by Smart Import (especially an Interactive Book containing multiple activities) may take longer than producing the content from scratch.

Americanised Spelling

Activities generated by Smart Import use US English, so must be manually corrected to UK English.

Non Subject Specific Questions

Content generated from a lecture recording can sometimes include questions that are not relevant to the resource, such as asking students who the lecturer is, if they introduce themselves in the recording. Therefore, it is crucial to review content before submitting it.

Lack of Imagery

Image based activities are not currently supported. Visual content must be produced manually.

Smart Import Example

Several resources in the MBChB programme have been partially generated using Smart Import and shared with GEP, Year 1 and Year 2 students in the Cardiovascular, Neurosensory, Respiratory and Urogenital system blocks.

This example shows an Interactive Book, which contains a glossary accordion, interactive video, flipcards, MCQ, true/false, drag the words and fill in the blank questions:

Using Panopto Recordings with Smart Import

Many of the H5P Smart Import resources created for the MBChB programme have been generated from Panopto recordings of teaching sessions.

Please contact the SOMAV inbox with the recording you wish to use with Smart Import and we will provide you with a publicly available link of your lecture recording. The recording must be temporarily set to public to provide access to Smart Import.

Content Limitations

Before using Smart Import, check the Content Limitations information to ensure the file type and size you want to use is acceptable.
