FAQ

H5P (HTML5 Package)

Find out what H5P is and how to use it to create interactive teaching resources. Plan your content and translate your ideas into engaging materials.

What is H5P?

H5P is a content development platform that offers educators a set of tools to create rich interactive resources without the need for expert developers. Combine multimedia elements such as videos, images, audio and text to transform didactic teaching content into engaging materials. Aim to reduce student cognitive load by breaking down information into manageable size resources. Through the LTI integration, H5P content is embedded within Canvas for students to access. Contact the School of Medicine TEL Team to request a H5P account.

What can I create with H5P?

With over 40 content types, there are many different options to explore. H5P has been used within the MBChB programme to enhance video recordings by adding in pop-up knowledge check questions, create interactive books with drag and drop activities and produce a branching simulation scenario. The most frequently used content types with in the MBChB programme are the Interactive Book, Interactive Video and Question Set.

Interactive Video Example: Embryology of the Kidney

Planning and Creating a H5P Resource

Top tips on planning your interactive resource can found on the Interactive Teaching Resources - Prepare guidance page.

There are a variety of content types that you can create within H5P. Please note only the content types listed as accessible by H5P are enabled on our site.

Visit H5P's Tutorial for Authors webpage for guides on how to use each content type.

What is H5P Smart Import?

Discover how H5P's generative AI tool 'Smart Import' can be used to help you generate resources using your own teaching materials.

Developing Image Based Activities

Drop and drop activities can give students the opportunity to label diagrams, sequence facts/data or sort concepts to re-enforce their learning. Visual content types usually take longer to develop, so we recommend storyboarding your concept and sourcing copyright free imagery first.

H5P's Drag and Drop Tutorial explains how to use the editor to build a drag and drop activity.

Drag and Drop Example: Conducting System and the ECG (Normal Electrical Axis)

Drag and Drop Top Tips

  • Microsoft PowerPoint is available to all UoL staff and can be used to create the background image for your drag and drop activity.
  • Insert images, shapes or charts onto a 16:9 PowerPoint slide and position them as needed. If you want students to drag a word or phrase as part of the activity, remember to redact any text from images before inserting them into H5P.
  • Save the PowerPoint slide as an image by going to File > Save As > Choose JPEG or PNG (keeps transparency).
  • Adding in a drop zone (dotted box) on H5P indicates where the student can 'drop' an element (text or image).
  • Ensure you select the correct answers in the drop zone and test the resource before submitting it.

Please contact the TEL Team if you have any questions or require further support.

Image Copyright

The university library provide a list of websites you can use to source copyright free images to use in your teaching materials - we recommend visiting ClinicalKey Student. The What do I need to know about copyright? page provides further copyright guidance.

H5P Resource Recommendations

The following recommendations for interactive H5P content are based on the School of Medicine lecture recording quality standards:

  1. Template Usage: Use the School of Medicine Word document and PowerPoint templates (login required to access the SoM intranet) as a guide when creating interactive content to maintain consistency with other course materials.
  2. Duration: Plan to limit recordings to an ideal maximum of 20 minutes to keep content concise and focused (desirable). Individual recordings must not exceed 40 minutes (essential). When incorporating interactivity, consider the overall duration of the resource.
  3. Learning Objectives: Ensure H5P activities relate to the learning objectives (LOs) provided by the School of Medicine.
  4. Key Content within resource: Present key points that address the learning content and support the learning objectives using text and image descriptions, rather than as verbal asides, to ensure accessibility and clarity.
  5. Accessibility: Check the colour contrast of images and text using WebAIM. Select the foreground and background colours to see if the contrast ratio passes WCAG standards. Use sans-serif fonts and ensure you add alt text to images.
  6. Visual Quality: Ensure images and graphics are high quality so they are legible and not blurry. Check through the entire resource once completed and amend any poor-quality content before submission.
  7. Closed Captions: : If a Panopto recording is included within a H5P resource, review and correct the closed captions. Support is available if needed; refer to Update/Request Captions on Recordings.
  8. Annual Review: Conduct an annual review of the resource to ensure it remains up-to-date and relevant and approve it for reuse if appropriate.
  9. Feedback Integration: Use student feedback to make necessary changes annually.
  10. Replacement: A more in-depth review and resource replacement occurs at least every 5 years to align with the latest educational standards and advancements.

Tips for reviewing H5P content

  • Increase Playback Rate: When reviewing Interactive Videos, speed up the playback to 1.5x or 2x to quickly review the content. This can save time while still allowing you to catch important details.
  • Functionality - Click through all the activities to check they work as expected.
  • Review Language – Smart Import uses American English. Spellings must be corrected in the editor.
  • Verify Smart Import Content – It is crucial to check that the outputs generated using AI tools, such as Smart Import, are accurate and relevant. See ‘What is H5P’s Smart Import?’ for more guidance.
  • Navigate Efficiently - In the editor view, use the ‘Collapse all content’ button to navigate easily through a resource that has multiple activities or questions.
  • Interactive Video Bookmarks - Use the bookmarks button to add markers when an activity appears on the video and use them to jump directly to an interaction.
  • Hidden Settings – Expand all drop-down menus to check for hidden settings.

H5P Submissions Folder Process

All new H5P resources and existing resources that have required edits should be uploaded to the #Submissions folder on H5P. This folder is where the School of Medicine receives the final and complete version of H5P activities for MBChB courses.

From here, the audio and visual quality is checked again by the Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) team. The resource is then moved to the relevant curriculum theme, system block or speciality folder. The teaching content record for the resource is updated, and the resource is then embedded on Canvas for students to access.

By submitting your H5P resource, you are indicating your approval for the content to be used in the MBChB programme, and your approval will be noted in the relevant year team’s lecture content record.

Move a H5P Resource to the Submissions Folder

If you have created a resource directly into your personal H5P folder called 'Your Name - My Work in Progress' - please follow the steps below to see how to move a resource into the #Submissions folder.

I don't have access to the Submissions folder

If you cannot access the Submissions folder in H5P, please get in touch with the TEL team.

  1. Complete a final review of your resource, ensuring it meets the standards of quality for MBChB content.
  2. Click the three dots ("More Options" button) on the right-hand side of your resource. Select "Move" on the pop-up menu.
  3. Navigate to the #Submissions folder, select it and choose "Move".
  4. You will see a pop-up message stating '1 item successfully moved'.
  5. Please inform the relevant Year administration team and TEL team that you have successfully submitted your completed resource.
