Interactive Teaching Resources - Prepare

Guidance on preparing online and face to face teaching materials for the MBChB programme

Developing a Teaching Session Page

All teaching sessions have an associated Canvas page. The guidance below will show you how to enrich that space on the VLE through the creation of interactive resources, tools to support face to face teaching and digital library resources.

Create Online Interactive Resources

Explore the various ways to enhance School of Medicine online content using interactive tools. From clinical branching scenarios in H5P to knowledge check questions using Panopto quizzes, there are many platforms available to staff to incorporate interactivity.

Tools for Face to Face Teaching Sessions

Enhance student engagement during face-to-face sessions by incorporating interactive tools and utilising the available lecture theatre equipment. Please click on the link above for more information.

Faculty of Academic and Clinical Educators (FACE)

FACE deliver CPD sessions throughout the year, some of which may be useful when preparing for your teaching session. Recordings of FACE presentations are found on the School of Medicine intranet

Sharing Library Resources

On Canvas you can add supplementary material, using existing resources from the University library, to provide alternative explanations, highlight wider context and encourage deeper understanding. Please see below for more information on the resources available:

Speaking Clinically

Speaking Clinically is a video archive of interviews with real patients who talk about their medical conditions, providing medical students with the opportunity to further their understanding of different diseases and practice. Please follow the link above to find out more about the resource and how it can be used on Canvas.

ClinicalKey Student

A library of medical books, journals, videos and images that are free to use and share with MBChB students.

A-Z Library Resources for Medicine

The School Liaison Librarian, Louise Minta, has a complete A-Z list of all library resources available for medicine.

Plan an Interactive Teaching Resource or Teaching Session

Before creating an online resource or planning an on-campus session, we recommend storyboarding your ideas first. Whilst planning, consider the standards of quality required for MBChB content.

Download the School of Medicine Word document and PowerPoint templates to adhere to School of Medicine branding for consistency (login required to access the SoM intranet).

Planning Top 'TIPS'

  1. Topic
Choose an area of the course students find challenging. Consider how the resource will benefit their learning.

  2. Interaction
Translate key points/learning outcomes into knowledge check activities and choose a relevant interactive tool to create these activities.
  3. Prepare
Outline the structure of the resource or session. If including video, consider duration and structure.
  4. Solution
Create the resource or design the session activity. Test, refine and quality assure it before sharing it with students.

What do I need to know about copyright?

Any 3rd party materials used by staff in teaching and learning must adhere to copyright law. The following guidance offers a brief ‘need to know’ overview of some essentials, and information provided by the University of Liverpool library.
