FAQ

Preparing Presentation Slides

The following guidance should be considered when preparing your slide deck. This guidance applies to both pre-recorded lecture content and lecture content that is delivered on-campus.

  1. MBChB Slide Template

If you are using a presentation slide deck in your recording, you should use the branded School of Medicine PowerPoint Template (External staff? Template attached at the bottom of this page). The template complies with accessibility legislation. If you have slides from previous resources, please transfer the content to the official template.

  1. Slide Contents

Include:

  • Title - on the title slide of your presentation please use the lecture title provided by the MBChB programme.

  • Learning Objectives - The learning objectives for each session need to be clearly defined and you should clarify how the content relates to each objective. You may include the objectives in introductory and conclusion slides or you might insert slides highlighting each objective, followed by the learning content, throughout the lecture.

  • Key (assessed) content - any assessed learning content should be presented in text format on slides.

Avoid:

  • Dates - avoid adding dates or references to current cultural events in your resource as subject to the School’s quality assurance processes, it may be appropriate for a resource to be used again in a subsequent year (change wording of this)

  • Personal Research - avoid presenting personal research if it is not directly relevant to the objectives. If it is relevant, ensure there is sufficient time available to explain this.

  • Copyrighted Material - sensitive and/or copyrighted information should not be included in presentations.

  • Covering text with images - you must ensure that all slide text is clearly visible and not covered by images or diagrams.

  • Recording video content (e.g. YouTube) that is embedded onto slides - this can reduce both the audio and visual quality of the embedded video. Instead, add the video into your Panopto recording. Please see Embed External Resources Into a Recording for more information.

Ensure:

  • Alternative text (Alt text) -  this should be provided on all images used in presentation slides to ensure that accessibility requirements are met. For example, screen-reading tools use alt text to describe images to the user, and students may use screen readers to support their understanding of content.

  • Credit images - any images used must be appropriately credited (ClinicalKey) and represent the (various) diversity populations listed below.

  • Diversity Expectations - lecture content must meet the School’s expectation with regard to diversity. If a lecture includes content about societal issues or symptoms, signs, pathology, pharmacology or treatments for which there are significant variations for different groups, ensure that these differences are explained.

"It is the expectation of the School that all curriculum themes will incorporate and cover material that reflects the diversity of the population, and where relevant, offer materials that reflect different healthcare needs in relation to all protected  characteristics (age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation)”.

  1. Incorporating Interactivity

Enhance your resource by incorporating interactive elements, such as quizzes and activities. Visit the Interactive Teaching Resources - Overview
guidance for more information.

  1. Submitting Slides

To comply with with the university's inclusive approach, presentation slides for all recorded material must be available for students. This includes:

  • Pre-recorded lectures
  • On-campus lectures
  • Small group teaching
  • Additional resources

You can send a copy of your slides to the relevant year team via email or SharePoint. Slides should be shared in their original PowerPoint format.

For on campus lectures, slides need to be submitted to the relevant administration team at least 2 working days (Mon-Fri) in advance.

Please note, you should not include any material in your slides that should not be uploaded to Canvas. For example, if the presentation contains Q&As then the answers should be removed before sharing.
